Mysticetus Navigates New Waters: Supporting Offshore Wind Development with Bay State Wind Project

Oct 1, 2016

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts - Mysticetus, LLC, a leading provider of marine operational software and services, announced today its key role in the Bay State Wind offshore wind farm site investigation off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. This project marks a strategic move for Mysticetus, leveraging its expertise in marine mammal monitoring and mitigation to support the burgeoning offshore wind energy sector.

Following the downturn in the oil and gas industry in 2016, Mysticetus identified a critical need for its specialized services in the rapidly growing offshore wind market. For the Bay State Wind project, contracted by Fugro, Mysticetus provided a comprehensive suite of services, including:

  • Installation and operation of infrared (IR) cameras: Used to detect marine mammals near the survey vessel, providing real-time data for mitigation efforts.

  • Marine mammal data collection: Experienced protected species observers tracked marine mammal presence and behavior, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.

  • Data analysis and reporting: Mysticetus provided detailed reports on marine mammal activity, contributing to the overall environmental assessment of the wind farm site.

"The transition to renewable energy sources like offshore wind is essential," said Dave Steckler, CEO of Mysticetus. "We are excited to apply our experience and technology to help make these projects a success, ensuring both responsible development and environmental protection."

The Bay State Wind project has the potential to generate up to 1,000MW of clean energy, powering hundreds of thousands of homes. Mysticetus is proud to play a part in bringing this important project to fruition.
